๐ As the descendants of great ancient civilizations, Mexico is still a fertile land of folk cultures today.Like many other ancient cultures,Mexican cultures have strong link with the afterworld and the spirits realms.

๐ Mexicans deeply believe that our reality is inseparably with the unseen worlds, life and death are equally celebrated in the culture.The Day of the dead will be the best example.The boarders of life and death will vanish on this day and the whole country will become a huge carnival.

๐ If you have watched โCocoโ by Disney Pixar, I guess you already got a brief impression on how the Mexican afterworld looks like. A bustling world fully packed with the deceased and Alebrije, the colorful mythical creatures.

๐ The Alebrije only existed in the world of imagination before the year 1936.A craftsman named Pedro Linares was suffering from a serious sickness.He dreamt of the Alebrije when he is laying on his sick bed.Right after his recovery, he decided to craft what he have seen in the dreams using sticks and papers.And Boom! Here comes the Alebrije!

๐Not long after the Alebrije were being brought to the reality.Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo,world famous painter and artist, had discovered these dazzling art work.And this is how the Alebrije enter the hall of fame in folk art.

๐Alebrije were made of paper at first.Craftsman in Oaxaca(a southern province in Mexico) were inspired by the designs and started the make their own versions of Alebrije. By blending the local Bursera wood carvings tradition and the Lineras design.
